- Story Text: - Wesley Snipes and Natassja Kinski were attended the premiere of their new film "One Night Stand," in Los Angeles on Tuesday (November 12).
Mike Figgis was also there - back in the director's chair for the first time since his Oscar-nominated film "Leaving Las Vegas." In the film, Snipes stars as Max Carlyle, a man who seems to have it all: a happy marriage to Mimi, (Ming-Na Wen) two healthy children and a successful career. But it all starts to fall apart after one night during a business trip to New York.
During that night, a chance encounter with a beautiful, seductive, and very married woman named Karen, (Kinski) sets off a series of events that threatens his marriage.
Asked by Reuters if he thought it was hard to stick with one partner, Snipes said he thought it wasn't natural, and said it should be an option.
To complicate matters, Karen's husband Vernon (Kyle MacLachlan) happens to be the brother of Max's best friend Charlie, an artist dying of AIDS (Robert Downey Jr).
Although infidelity is established as the core of the story, Figgis is careful to point out that he doesn't want the film to pass judgment on any of the characters.
MacLachlan said that's what he found interesting about the film.
"The one night stand, the infidelity, even some of the race stuff is there, it happens. It's really the catalyst for the journey, kicks us all in the pants and say now go and see how that affects you", he said.
"One Night Stand" was filmed principally on stages and at local locations in Los Angeles, with an additional two weeks of location shooting in New York, where the production shut down 10 blocks on Park Avenue to mount an epic-scale parade scene that causes the traffic jam that propels Max back to the hotel where he has his fateful encounter with Karen.
Although it's just now opening in the United States, Snipes has already garnered critical acclaim for his performance abroad. He recently won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
Snipes said he hoped with the success of this kind of a movie, more American directors would follow Figgis' example and choose actors based on their calibur of skill and not just because they may be one flesh tone or another. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
