- Story Text: One of the world's most enduring bands, the Bee Gees, appeared in concert in Johannesburg at the weekend for the African leg of their "One Night Only" tour.
The spectacular concert, held at Loftus Versveld stadium in Pretoria was one of only six shows the group are performing in a period of six months.
The Bee Gees are the fifth most successful recording artists of all time.
Having written number one hits over four decades from the sixties to the nineties, the brothers Gibb released their 17th album "One Night Only" (including the massive hit song, "Saturday Night Fever") in September this year.
The concert on Saturday (November 28), the Bee Gees first on the African continent, was a sell-out.It included performances by the Bee Gees of all the fans' favourite songs including "Massachussets", "To Love Somebody", "Gotta Get A Message To You", "Words", "Nights on Broadway", more up tempo smash hits "You Should Be Dancing", "Tragedy", "Jive Talkin"
and hits from Grease and Saturday Night Fever.
The group's world tour is an exclusive one to say the least but limiting the number of gigs was a deliberate move by the band to keep the tour duration to a minimum. With so few concerts, the Bee Gees say they are able to enjoy every gig and give their best performances.
"We don't want to go on tour and kill ourselves, we want to go on tour and have fun," says Maurice Gibb.
The "One Night Only" tour kicked off in Dublin, Ireland at the end of August and was shortly followed by a date at London's Wembley stadium.Buenos Aires played host to the band in October and after Saturday's concert, the band have a few months off before heading 'down under' for a concert in Auckland, New Zealand on March 20, 1999.The tourin Sydney, Australia at the end of March.
In 1997, the Bee Gees collected the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Britis as well as the American Music Awards and the Monte Carlo World Music Awards. In the same year they were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
