The Manic Street Preachers, who are the only band to win both Best Band and Best Album at the prestigious Brit Awards on two occasions (1997 and 1999), are to celebrate their tenth anniversary in December, and their successful working relationship is underpinned by childhood friendship.
With a prolific output of five albums and twenty-six singles, the band have had their lows as well as highs, most notably when guitarist Richey James went missing on the eve of an American tour in February 1995, he has never been found.
They are one of the few bands around with a social conscience, and they have been berated by critics as well as idolised by fans for this. They will be taking time off to write a new album in the year 2000, but promise to return will a new image and new sound, constant reinvention being one of the secrets of their success and their longevity.
