- Story Text: The 1999 Mobo Awards have taken place in London.
Evergreen American superstar Tina Turner was given a lifetime achievement award on Wednesday at Britain's 1999 Black Music Awards in recognition of her 40-year-long rollercoaster career.
"Black music has finally been recognised," she told cheering supporters at London's cavernous Royal Albert Hall.
"I've been in the business since 1960 and to my knowledge black music has never been rewarded in this way."
She hailed British fans for helping her comeback success in the Eighties with her hugely successful "Private Dancer"
album.
"Thanks for all your support," said the 60-year-old star.
Asked what songs she would most like to be remembered for, Turner picked "Simply The Best", "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got To Do With it" and then she belatedly decided: "No - I've got four.I've got to put 'Nutbush City limits' in because I wrote it myself and it's my hometown."
The MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards were set up four years ago to give greater recognition to black music which accounted for 40 percent of all singles and 21 percent of album sales in Britain last year.
The awards, which now boast an international television audience of 100 million, were the brainwave of promoter Kanyan King.
TLC and Lauryn Hill were the hot favourites beforehand with four nominations apiece but on the night, no one emerged as the big outright winner - except for English star Beverley Knight who won best album and best R & B act.
Hill, much garlanded at the Grammy awards in Los Angeles, won the Best International Act award and told the ceremony by videolink from the United States: "God bless you and keep shining through."
TLC won the Best Video Award while millionaire Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z was picked as the Best International Hip Hop Act.
As he presented one of the prizes, U.S.television show host Jerry Springer came up with the perfect idea for the next version of his combative show: "We are going to have all the losers beating the hell out of the winners. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
