Date:20th January 1997
Summary:It took Steve Fossett, a 52-year-old US commodity broker, six days, two hours and 49 minutes to reach India by balloon on January 20 after taking off from St Louis, Missouri, January 13. Fossett landed in Nonkhar village, some 550 km (330 miles) south-east of the Indian capital New Delhi. But he was putting a brave face on his failure to get the record he wanted. He described the flight as a success because it did set new records for the greatest distance and longest time in the air. He said: "I don't take it as failure. I am not disappointed because I have gone and tried something extremely difficult."
