- Story Text: In a time period marred with dubious millennium distinctions, perhaps the most questionable of them all comes under the guise of "Album of the Century."
So, who was the most successful act of the 20th century? Was it Duke Ellington? Frank Sinatra? Maybe The Beatles? Or Michael Jackson? Could it be Garth Brooks? If you guessed any of the aforementioned, you're wrong.
The best selling album of the 20th century was The Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975".
The Eagles: Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Don Felder, Timothy B.Schmit and Joe Walsh were honoured at a ceremony in Hollywood as their appropriately titled album "Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975" was named by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as the "Album of the Century".
Released in 1976, "Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975" has sold over 26-million units in the United States alone, over a million copies more than Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, The Eagles last release "Hell Freezes Over" was released in 1994.
Front man Glenn Fry informed those attending the award presentation that a new studio album is in the works and would consist of non- "greatest hits" material. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
