- Story Text: Cannes has gone supersonic over the arrival in town of the world famous Victoria's Secret fashion show. The leading lingerie company, co-sponsors of this year's amFAR's Cinema Against AIDS benefit, chartered Concorde from New York to Nice for their top models to kick-off the event.
Victoria's Secret is world renowned for it's lingerie fashion shows but until now, the company has chosen New York locations and invitation-only audiences in the United States to launch its new ranges. This week however, Victoria's Secret is moving its annual high-profile show to Europe for the very first time.
As part of the Cannes Film Festival, Victoria's Secret has teamed up with amFAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research), Miramax Films and Mondera.com for the Cinema Against AIDS 2000 benefit to be hosted by co-founder Elizabeth Taylor and supporter Elton John. The annual event takes place on Thursday (May 18) at the Palm Beach Club on the Croisette in Cannes where Roger Verge, chef-proprietor of the celebrated Moulin de Mougins restaurant will prepare a fabulous dinner for guests to eat during the show.
To start the three-day event with a bang, Victoria's Secret chartered Concorde from New York to Nice to bring their top models including Karen Mulder, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum to Cannes. Over 25 models will be taking part in the fashion show on Thursday including some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, Laetitia Casta, Stephanie Seymour, Eva Herzigova and Naomi Campbell, to name a few.
Despite being accustomed to the catwalk, many of the models claimed to be nervous about modelling underwear in front of so many people and admitted to preparing their 'bodies' for weeks in advance, to ensure they were in the best shape possible. Some went to even greater lengths.
"I do get really nervous especially now in Cannes it's going to be people having dinner while you're going down the runway barely wearing anything but I got lucky, I'm not wearing any g-strings, I wasn't going to. I'm wearing two bikini tops and one bathing suit, bikini bottoms and tops and one bathing suitso that's okay. But high heels and I did get very nervous like I usually go to yoga once a week and last week I went four times just to get my body in shape you knowl I keep on finding excuses, I got a facial, I got a manicure I got a pedicure, I got a brazilian bikini wax anything..massage, body wrap, it's a whole preparation you know (WHAT'S A BRAZILIAN BIKINI WAX?) Brazilian bikini wax, it's damn small. I was like, ah because I didn't look at what she was doing and then when I came out, I was with my friend and she started, oh my God, it's like a goatie (beard),"
said model Ingrid.
Although Victoria's Secret were keeping details of the new range a secret, model Tyra Banks hinted that jewels were on the menu.
"I'm going to be wearing some spectacular jewels my bra and panties are going to be bling blinging, do you know what that means? Bling Bling is like a rap term for diamonds like blam, like Puff Daddy and all those guys who wear all that jewellery, they call it 'iced out'. I'm going to be iced out on the runway, Victoria's Secret is bringing hip-hop to the runway when you see what I've got on," Banks said.
Tables for this year's amFAR dinner are so sought after, they are said to be fetching prices ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 per table.
