- Story Text: Opera superstar Luciano Pavarotti held a "peace"
concert in Seoul to promote harmony on the divided peninsula.
Pavarotti's concert on Friday (June 30) night, marking the recent historic North-South summit and the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War (1950-53), drew up more than 50 thousand of fans.
The Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950. It ended in 1953 in an armed truce that is still in effect.
Crowds of people, mostly Koreans, filled the Chamsil stadium, home of 1988 summmer Olympics, to listen to the World's beloved tenor and a United Nations (U.N.) ambassador for peace.
In the concert, titled "Peace Forever, United as One", Pavarotti sang popular opera numbers with soprano Carmela Remigio and conductor Leone Magiera as well as Korean musicians.
The tenor has visited Seoul three times. His first performance was made in 1977, following his 1993 visit.
When Pavarotti met with South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, he promised the president to sing at the 2002 World Cup ceremony.
The finals will be jointly held by South Korea and Japan.
Pavarotti said he would like to sing at the ceremony with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo. He said he and the two other musicians are all enthusiastic soccer fans.
The tenor also expressed his willingness to have a charity concert for North Korean children. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
