- Story Text: GQ magazine's annual "Men of the Year" awards have been handed out in New York, honouring fourteen men of distinction from the worlds of fashion, music, film, sports, television and theatre. Amongst those in attendance to accept their prizes were Pierce Brosnan, Michael J. Fox, Elton John and Russell Crowe. As you'd expect from such distinguished company they all had something to say - Michael J. Fox took a swipe at George W. Bush, Elton John spoke movingly about AIDs - and Russell Crowe - well, Russell spoke about 'men in skirts.' The 5th annual GQ, "Men of the Year" awards brought out the best from the worlds of film, sports, television and music. Celebrities were on hand to take part in the show that honoured a number of the world's most famous, stylish, athletic and brave men.
007 himself, Pierce Brosnan, is featured on the cover of GQ's, "Men of the Year" edition.
When asked what he thinks a "Man of the Year" award is all about, Brosnan stated, "I think style is more than just the clothes, I think it's about who the person is and how you live your life and the way you talk and walk your life, I guess so if they want to give it to me than I'll accept it."
Michael J. Fox was awarded the "Man of Courage" award from Hollywood star, Kevin Spacey.
In his acceptance speech, Fox modestly stated, "I wake up every day and I take one step to start the day and I keep going until I go to sleep and I do the best that I can do."
Fox suffers from Parkinson's Disease and he clearly moved the audience with his words and poignant jesters of gratitude and thanks.
The evening featured some of the hottest male musical acts of today including Latin sensation, Enrique Iglesias and one of the most dynamic groups in rock today, Third Eye Blind.
For pop music fans, 98 degrees turned up the heat.
One of the funniest moments of the night came from an unexpected source.
Russell Crowe, star of this year's smash movie "Gladiator," poked fun at his Film Actor award when he said, "Thanks to GQ, thanks to all the readers and thanks to Ridley Scott who made that film.
"I suppose that as you guys concentrate on fashion that must mean that real fur and men in skirts are back in."
Ridley Scott, on hand to accept his Film Director award chuckled in the audience.
One of the few leading men who rival Crowe in popularity, Ben Affleck, accepted the Fashion Designer Award on behalf of Giorgio Armani.
And the always stylish and ever so humble, Sir Elton John was awarded the Humanitarian award.
In his acceptance speech, he continued his quest to raise awareness about AIDS, "There is an enormous challenge for us all to understand this epidemic is out of proportion and is quite honestly a catastrophe, so next year I plan to go to South Africa myself, to Kenya, to other African countries maybe and to do concerts on a very large scale not just for Africa but for people in Third world countries who have no medicine, no shelter, no food, no comfort, no dignity."
Other award winners included Mathew Broderick for Theater Actor, Carlos Santana for Solo Artist and the 'Shaq', Shaquille O'Neal for Team Athlete.
GQ's Men of the Year Awards are selected by GQ's readers via an on-line poll announced in the June issue.
The show will be broadcast on the FOX network in the US on December 9th. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
