- Story Text: Yet another movie featuring Satan as a main character took a bow in Los Angeles when Adam Sandler and Patricia Arquette attended the World Premiere of their newest comedy "Little Nicky."
Into a movie season where Linda Blair was possessed by the devil, Winona Ryder battled the devil and Elizabeth Hurley was the devil, comes lovable and money-making funnyman Adam Sandler playing the son of the devil in "Little Nicky."
He plays the title role as a young man who keeps pretty much to himself while his beloved father, played by Harvey Keitel, runs a rather peculiar Hell, filled with human dartboards, horny blackbirds and lots of scatalogicial humor.
But he's called into service when Nicky's two scheming brothers hatch a plan to take over Hell by creating a brand new one on Earth, specifically in New York City.
Unfortunately, this plan will result in the destruction of their father and everything he built.
Nicky travels to Earth to stop his brothers, and, aided only by a sarcastic talking bulldog, must learn from scratch such human talents as eating, sleeping and falling madly in love with an eccentric art student named Valerie, played by Patricia Arquette.
Also in the cast are "Notting Hill" co-star Rhys Ifans and Tommy Lister, Jr. as Nicky's evil brothers, "Saturday Night Live" star Kevin Nealon as Hell's Gatekeeper, regular Sandler collaborators Peter Dante and Jonathan Loughran as a pair of Nicky's heavy metal earthly groupies, and Rodney Dangerfield as Nicky's grandfather, the founder of Hell.
The film is directed by Steven Brill and written by Sandler and his longtime writing partner Tim Herlihy, who previously starred along with Sandler and Nealon on "Saturday Night Live."
Although the film is a comedy, it involved a level of production usually only seen in big-budget action films and science fiction fantasies. It contains over 300 special effects shots, animatronics, complicated prosthetics and intricate wire and harness stuntwork.
The filmmaker's spared no expense primarily because Sandler's last three films were box office sensations.
"Big Daddy" and "The Waterboy" both grossed over 100 million dollars in the United States alone, while "The Wedding Singer"
broke records when it opened. This track record has elevated Sandler into the 20 million dollar paycheck club.
New Line Cinema is hoping their investment is worth it when "Little Nicky" opens in theaters throughout the United States on Friday, November 10.
