- Story Text: In their first public appearance together since their high profile wedding, British director Guy Ritchie and music superstar Madonna attended the American premiere of Ritchie's new caper "Snatch" on Thursday, January 18 in Los Angeles.
Despite all the attention on his personal life, Ritchie was there first and foremost to celebrate the importation of his second feature film into America. It has already become a huge hit in his native United Kingdom, where it opened in September of 2000 as the highest grossing R-rated British film in U.K. history.
Fans of Ritchie's first film, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" will recognize "Snatch" as familiar territory. Like the previous movie, "Snatch" is a complicated tale of gangsters and the London underworld full of heists, shady characters and double-dealing.
"Snatch" departs from its predecessor by including several American characters, played by "Get Shorty" gangster Dennis Farina, Golden Globe-nominated "Traffic" co-star Benecio Del Toro and, most notably, Brad Pitt.
Pitt specifically asked Ritchie to cast him after seeing "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and agreed to a big pay cut. Ironically, the film's biggest star spends all his time muttering in a nearly unintelligable Irish accent.
Two veterans of Ritchie's first film also appear in "Snatch." Jason Statham, whom Ritchie cast in his first feature film after seeing him on a television commercial, returns as a boxing promoter, while former football star Vinnie Jones plays another tough-as-nails mob enforcer, this one named "Bullet Tooth" Tony.
"Snatch" opens in theatres throughout the United States on Friday, January 19. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
