- Story Text: With the release of Steven Spielberg's latest film "A.I." still a month away, the film's producer Kathleen Kennedy and 13-year old star Haley Joel Osment recently attended a seminar on real life artificial intelligence at the respected Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Even though the scientists and researchers at M.I.T.
did not consult or help with the making of "A.I." in any way, Warner Brothers decided to use their world renowned Artificial Intelligence Lab as the backdrop for the launch of their promotional campaign on behalf of their big summer film.
Haley Joel Osment, who is known for speaking and acting like a grown man way beyond his 13 years, handled himself admirably during a question and answer session with M.I.T.
students, faculty, and members of the media. He then toured the facility and spent time interacting with Kismet, a socially intelligent robot that communicates with humans via a series of facial expressions, head positions and tones of voice.
Founded in 1959, the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Laboratory leads the world in research on computer vision, robotics and intelligence. It consists of 230 members working on a wide variety of aspects of intelligent systems.
The film "A.I." is written and directed by Steven Spielberg, based on an idea originated by the late filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. Set in the distant future, it's a tale of humanity in an age of intelligent machines. The story focuses on the relationships and challenges involved when a robotic boy, played by Osment, coexists as a member of a family.
After a series of unexpected circumstances leave him without final acceptance by humans or machines, he journeys to discover where he truly belongs.
"A.I." also stars Jude Law and William Hurt and is produced by Spielberg's longtime producing partner Kathleen Kennedy, who also worked on "E.T." and the "Jurassic Park"
series. It opens in theaters throughout the United States on Friday, June 29.
