Ricci, orphaned while fleeing Russia as a young Jewish girl, arrives in England where she is forbidden to speak Yiddish, but learns to sing. Ten years later she goes to Paris where she becomes a chorus girl and befriends an ambitious blonde Russian dancer, Oscar nominated actress Cate Blanchett.
She starts to save, hoping to earn enough money to pay for passage to America. Together Ricci and Blanchett find jobs in a new opera company where Ricci falls in love with gypsy horse-handler, Johnny Depp. Blanchett falls for John Turturro, an arrogant Italian opera singer.
When Germany invades Paris Turturro, with Blancett at his side, immediately collaborates with the Nazis, while Ricci joins Depp and his band of gypsy musicians. With the Nazis plans to round up the Jews and the Gypsies, Ricci decides to stay and fight but Depp encourages her to leave.
