- Title: GREECE: JEAN MICHEL JARRE PERFORMS CONCERT AT THE ACROPOLIS IN ATHENS
- Date: 11th June 2001
- Summary: SCU (SOUNDBITE) (English) JEAN MICHEL JARRE SAYING: 'I'd been asked to do this concert for a very interesting and very active foundation for children and obviously this is a proposal that you can't refuse. It's such a special place, particularly because it's where everything began in terms of theatre music and you have a feeling being here and performing here that you are just one instant or one tiny piece of a long chain of artists since a long time ago.' - Story Text: Not content to have staged spectacular concerts at the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China and, more recently, the Pyramids of Egypt, French composer Jean Michel Jarre has taken his stunning visual show to another of the ancient wonders of the world, the Acropolis in the Greek city of Athens.
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Herod Atticus Odeon at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Jean Michel Jarre performed the first of two unique concerts on Tuesday (June 19) in front of a 3,000-strong audience.
Using state-of-the-art scenography, Jarre, the master of synthesized music, treated fans and dignitaries alike to two hours of music fused with vision and light as only he knows how.
The concerts, which coincided with the annual Hellenic Cultural Festival, also gave Jarre an opportunity to introduce audiences to a new composition - Acropolis - which he's written especially for the city. Describing the piece, Jarre recently referred to it as 'an artistic poetic tribute to the Acropolis with sets adapted to the architecture of the venue (Herod Atticus Odeon)'.
The concerts have been held in support of the ELPIDA - Friends Association of Children with Cancer, all proceeds of which will go towards the construction of a hospital for children with cancer.
On his return to France, Jarre said he intended to get back in the studio to record a new album but he said he was open to new ideas and fresh approaches to making music.
And, although Jarre said he would continue to perform at impressive venues around the world if the opportunity arises, he is interested in pursuing new avenues. He's even expressed a desire to perform at Glastonbury or the Edinburgh Festival in the near future - if he's invited, that is. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
