- Story Text: Actor, Johnny Depp has delighted fans at the 27th American Film Festival, France, when he attended the French premiere of his latest movie 'Blow' on September 5, 2001.
Johnny Depp plays George Jung, your average small-town American boy who decided to pursue the American dream his way: by becoming the first to import cocaine to the United States on a large scale. Co-star Penelope Cruz was not at the premiere.
Johnny Depp arrived in Deauville, France, yesterday (September 5th) to attend a press conference and French premiere for his movie 'Blow' without either his wife, Vanessa Paradis or co-star Penelope Cruz to accompany him. Depp was mobbed by the media and screaming fans who were rewarded by autograph signing sessions at both the press conference and premiere.
Talking about his role in the movie, Depp said of his real life character, George Jung.
'He is a guy who went out when he was a kid in search of freedom, you know, that was his dream just to be free and he bought the ticket of what was the American Dream.' Depp was also asked to compare his relationship with his own daughter (from Vanessa Paradis) to that of George Jung's. He replied that: 'Today his relationship with his daughter is really not happening. He really doesn't have a relationship with his daughter at this point, which is to say at the least sad.
For me doing the film and speaking with George and certainly being a father and at that time and being a new Dad, yeah, I mean anything and everything that I was feeling or could imagine in my own life - you know - the possibilities, yeah, you can't fake that stuff'.
Johnny Depp plays George Jung, your average small-town American boy who decided to pursue the American dream his way: by becoming the first to import cocaine to the United States on a large scale in the 1970s.
Jung became addicted not only to drugs but to the dream of a life without rules - and nearly lost everything that mattered to him.
Looking very much the part of a cool, aloof, Hollywood heartthrob, Depp posed for cameras at the premiere in a beaten-up hat, smoking what looked like a Cherokee cigar.
When pushed on the whereabouts of his co-star Penelope Cruz, Depp was equally aloof saying: 'Good question, I don't know'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
