- Story Text: Natalie Imbruglia returns after a break from her previous album to release "White Lillies Island."
The new album, in stores earlier this month, is a collection of personal songs which include references to a recent depression and the love of her life, Silverchair frontman Daniel John. During a performance at London's Virgin Megastore on November 9th, Imbruglia impressed crowds with her beautiful voice and candid lyrical abilities.
It's been three years since her debut album, but Natalie Imbruglia is proving to crowds that her voice and lyrics are now stronger than ever before. Last week, hoards of people gathered at London's Virgin Megastore to listen to the chart-topping Imbruglia perform a collection of intimate songs from her second solo album, "White Lillies Island."
Imbruglia says that writing these songs was an incredibly personal experience: "It's like a stream of consciousness, the lyric. So when it was written I was very depressed writing the album, and going through a very hard time. It was a turning point when we made that song because I kind of got to that point where I was so worried about it that I couldn't get any worse and the only way to go was up, really. So that song kind of represents letting go and kind of confronting your fears but then accepting them and moving forward. And also, when we were recording the song, one of the verses wasn't written yet, we needed another verse. And I actually got a phone call that my grandfather died, so it is also quite personal for me as well because that verse I wrote kind of with him in mind."
To Imbruglia, songwriting is the chance to address the emotions that are difficult to deal with in daily life. And contrary to the sometimes melancholy nature of her lyrics, she seems to be an overall happy person: "You come across as being such a, sort of, well balanced, confident person, I can't imagine you feel anything other than this really calm individual."
"Oh, I can be. I think it all comes out when I am songwriting, because I am a very happy person you know, and I think the songs, it all comes out in those. Especially when you are touring and you're promoting, you are so busy, you are running around, and there are cameras and flashing lights, and you don't really have time to stop and think about how you are feeling, so it builds up and it builds up. But when you stop to make a record, everything you haven't dealt with for the last year is all sitting there waiting for you to, kind of, write about."
Imbruglia admits it was hard to sit down and write after her incredibly popular debut album, but once she got around to doing it, it was as though she was picking up a conversation with an old friend: "Well, I took the year out, which, in hindsight, probably was a bad idea because I've learned a very good lesson about songwriting: you should never stop. Even if I wanted to take time out, I should have kept writing, I should have creatively kept myself stimulated because it's very difficult to get back into it, especially after an album like "Left the Middle" that did really well. So I found starting hard, especially because I am extremely critical of myself.
But once I got into it I really really enjoyed it, and then it was just a challenge of making it a really strong album, I wanted it just to be more consistent, and like, more glue, like it is more of a journey from start to finish than the first record."
And it appears to be quite an easy job for her with the influence of her seemingly perfect personal life: "I'd like to maybe have a house there and a place here and travel back and forward."
"Does that have something to do with Daniel John from Silverchair?"
"I'm sure it has got something to do with Daniel!"
"You've been quoted as saying that he is your true love, is that something you feel, that you are kind of soul mates because you have been out with him before I believe."
"I do, I do feel that, yeah."
"I think it's maybe, do you feel it is part of the happiness you are feeling now, because you just seem so...."
"Everything is just going really well, you know, I am working really hard, I am really happy with the record. I am getting to sing, and I'm in love, it doesn't get much better than that."
It might, however, if her album continues to do well.
Already it is listed at number 15 in the British charts. But for right now, Imbruglia has better things to think about -- her music and her happiness. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
