Title:France: Surfers Flock To Biarritz Surf Festival
Date:18th July 1997
Summary:Hundreds of surfers from around the world gathered on the French Atlantic coast last week for the fifth annual Biarritz Surf Festival. The festival, which ran from July 14-20, was initially hampered by cloudy weather. But by July 19 conditions were perfect for the finals of the Sun Valley International Longboard Classic. Californian Joel Tudor chose his waves carefully to win first place. Tudor held off challenges from Alex Salazar of Brazil and Hawaii's Bonga Perkins, the current world champion, to secure his triumph. Former world champion Rusty Keaulana took a share of fifth place, while the 1996 champion, Frenchman Michel Demont failed to win a place in the international competition. Demont had emerged victorious in the European Tam Tam Classic earlier in the week.
