- Story Text: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" set a record in Germany when it opened on 1,226 of the countries 4,738 film screens. Hundreds packed theatres across the country to see the childrens' film at screenings at one minute past midnight.
The previous record for the widest launch in Germany, the worlds second largest market for films in terms of box office revenue, was set last year two years ago with Star Wars: Episode I -- Phantom Menace with 1,005 copies.
German film industry officials expect the film produced and distributed by Warner-Bros. AOL.N> to become the top box office draw in the country's history, passing the 1997 blockbuster Titanic which some 80 million in Germany saw.
In North America, "Harry Potter" grossed $90 million during its first weekend in U.S. and Canadian theatres -- the biggest movie debut ever -- and added $14.3 million on Monday and Tuesday combined to bring its cumulative tally in five days to nearly $104.6 million.
Based on the first of four wildly popular children's books by author J.K. Rowling, "Harry Potter" has been one of the most widely anticipated films of the year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
