- Story Text: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Thursday (July 18), with favourites like the sit-com "Friends"
and the White House drama "The West Wing" racking up nods in numerous categories, along with a the HBO funereal dramedy "Six Feet Under" tallying 23 nominations.
HBO's funereal family soap opera "Six Feet Under"
buried the competition on Thursday (July 18) among contenders for the prime-time Emmy Awards, taking 23 nominations, including a bid for outstanding drama.
Last year's big Emmy winner, NBC's White House drama "The West Wing," followed with 21 nods, also including one for best drama.
Those two shows were joined on the list of best drama nominees by CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," NBC's long-running legal series "Law & Order" and the breakout Fox espionage thriller "24."
Nominated as best comedy series were last year's winner in that category, HBO's "Sex and the City," along with the CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," NBC's smash hit "Friends,"
NBC's "Will & Grace" and HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
The 23 nominations garnered by "Six Feet Under," about a dysfunctional family that runs a funeral home, came just four bids shy of the record 27 earned by veteran ABC cop drama "NYPD Blue" in 1994 as the most by any series in a single year.
The absence of HBO mob drama "The Sopranos," which led the pack last year with 22 nominations but was ineligible for Emmy consideration this year because it went a season without new episodes, opened up the field to some new blood.
The critically acclaimed show earned nominations for six of its regular cast members, including Peter Krause and Michael C. Hall as brothers Nate and David Fisher, who will square off for best lead actor in a drama series. Australian actress Rachel Griffiths, who plays Nate's fiancee, and Frances Conroy, who plays possessive family matriarch Ruth Fisher, were both nominated as best lead actress in a drama.
Vying for best actor honours against Krause and Hall were Martin Sheen for "The West Wing," Kiefer Sutherland for "24"
and Michael Chiklis for the FX cable network's controversial cop show "The Shield."
The roster of nominees for best actress in a drama also includes Allison Janney of "The West Wing," Amy Brenneman for CBS legal drama "Judging Amy" and Jennifer Garner for ABC freshman spy thriller "Alias."
"Everybody Loves Raymond" co-star Patricia Heaton, who won the prize for best actress in a comedy the past two years, was nominated again on Thursday, along with Jennifer Aniston for "Friends," Jane Kaczmarek for the quirky Fox series "Malcolm in the Middle," Sarah Jessica Parker for "Sex and the City"
and Debra Messing for "Will & Grace."
Nominated for lead actor in a comedy was Bernie Mac for his self-titled Fox series "The Bernie Mac Show," along with "Everybody Loves Raymond" star Ray Romano, Kelsey Grammer for NBC's "Frasier" and two "Friends" co-stars, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry.
The HBO cable network, a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc., led the networks in nominations overall, snaring a total of 93, followed by NBC, owned by the General Electric Co., with 89.
CBS, a division of Viacom Inc. was third with 50 Emmy bids, followed by Walt Disney Co.-owned ABC with 35, and Fox, owned by News Corp. Ltd., with 33.
The 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, twice delayed last year due to the Sept. 11 attacks and the U.S.-led bombing of Afghanistan, will be presented in a live ceremony on NBC from Los Angeles in September.
