- Title: United Kingdom: British Pop & Rock Stars Arrive At The Royal Albert Hall To Perform At A Charity
- Date: 15th September 1997
- Summary: British rock stars held a concert in aid of the residents of the Caribbean island of Monserrat which has been devastated by recent volcanic eruptions. London's Royal Albert Hall was the venue for the benefit concert, organised by veteran promoter Harvey Goldsmith and record producer Sir George Martin, who built his Air studio on the island in 1979. Martin has worked with many major British artists, most famously the Beatles, and was able to call on the services of Sir Paul McCartney, who immediately made himself available for the show on September 15.Also on the bill was singer and drummer Phil Collins. He said Montserrat was a lovely place, adding that he had spent a couple of months there with Eric Clapton in the 1980s. Former Police frontman and now solo artist Sting said he was pleased to be appearing with McCartney and Collins. He said he had also worked at Martin's Air studio in Monserrat. Sting said he was shocked to hear of the island's plight and wanted to give something back to its people.Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair met Montserrat Chief Minister David Brandt to discuss the crisis on the former paradise island. The Soufriere Hills volcano came to life in 1995 after being dormant for centuries.
