- Title: Italy: Earthquake Damage
- Date: 30th September 1997
- Summary: Slight earth tremors have continued to rumble through the Umbria and Le Marche regions of Italy, four days after two earthquakes hit the area killing 11 people. In the hillside town of Assisi workers continued on September 30 to sift through the rubble that has been brought out of the famous St Francis Basilica in the hope of restoring the famous Giotto frescoes. But elsewhere in the region the worries are more mundane as those left homeless by the earthquake struggle to rebuild their lives. Eighty-three-year-old Claudio Aloisi has lived in the town of Norcera all his life. His wife died four months before the earthquake and he says his house was all he had left. Now its roof has crumbled, the walls are cracked and he will have to live elsewhere. "Now I have nothing," he says. Most of Norcera's residents have had to find alternative accommodation as the earthquakes left more than 70 per cent of their homes uninhabitable. The Berlucci family have been forced to live in a caravan in the village of Campo Donico. "We have to start again from scratch," said Giulia Berlucci philosophically. Luckier than most, the 150 people being housed at the site are provided with meals at lunch and dinner served with wine and water for free by the local restaurant. Much of the damage in nearby Fabriano has affected new apartment blocks where residents can only enter their houses escorted by firemen to collect essential items.
