Summary:The first woman to sit as a member of the British parliament was an American - Nancy Astor. She came to England in 1906 and married the Honourable Waldorf Astor, himself an MP. When he was made a peer and had to give up his seat in the House of Commons, his wife stood at the next election - and won. She took her seat at Westminster in 1919 and held it until 1945.
