- Summary: The people of Eire went to the polls on October 30 1997 to choose a successor to Mary Robinson, the republic's first woman head of state, who retired in September. A poll in the Irish Times on October 29 give Mary McAleese, the Fianna Fail party candidate, a 13 point lead ahead of Mary Banotti, MEP and Fine Gael party candidate. McAleese, a law professor, comes from neighbouring UK-ruled Northern Ireland. However, under the Eire constitution residents of Northern Ireland are entitled to citizenship of the republic. Other candidate where: Rosemary Scallon - who, under the name 'Dana', won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest - standing on an anti-abortion/anti-divorce platform. Adi Roche - Anti-nuclear .Derek Nally, the only man in the contest - Victim support. On October 31 Mary McAleese was declared the winner and installed as Eire's eighth president on November 11 1997.
