Title:Kenya: Torrential El Nino Rains Cause Floods
Date:15th January 1998
Summary:Thousands of residents in Kenya's capital Nairobi were unable to leave their homes because of torrential El Nino rains that cut off whole districts and threatened the country's tourism and farm-based economy. A steady downpour blamed on the El Nino weather phenomenon, flooded Nairobi and other parts of the country on January 15 1998, straining the country's fragile transport network. Queues of cars, trucks and commuter buses struggled to get through the water on the main roads to the city. In a once trendy middle-class estate in a Nairobi district, teenagers formed emergency water transport gangs, ferrying residents on their backs or in canoes. The rain also added to a deteriorating sanitary situation in Nairobi. Children splashed in pools of water next to a rubbish tip.
