- Date: 17th May 1998
- Summary: Show business legend Bob Hope, who wise-cracked his way through vaudeville, movies, radio and TV for seven decades, was speechless May 17 as he was knighted at the British Embassy in Washington DC. Hope was born Leslie Hope in Eltham, England, on May 29, 1903, the fifth of seven sons of a stonemason. His father moved his family to Cleveland when Hope was three to work on a church. Hope first showed a flair for comedy when he won a Charlie Chaplin imitation contest at the age of 10. That flair continued throughout his life on the vaudeville stage, radio, television and film. The entertainer is renowned for entertaining America's fighting men and women overseas. In the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam, and Gulf wars, Hope cheered troops with up-to-the minute jokes.
