Hague, in Paris for a meeting with French President Jacques Chirac on May 19, 1998, said the vote was a great opportunity for peace in Northern Ireland that would not come around again anytime soon. A spokeswoman for Chirac said Hague and the French president had discussed European issues generally as well as the Northern Ireland referendum.
