- Story Text: Mr. Abba Eban, the Israeli Foreign Minister, arrived in Nicosia yesterday (Monday) to resume talks with the United Nations Middle East peace envoy, Dr. Gunnar Jarring.
Mr. Eban was met at Nicosia Airport by Cypriot Foreign Minister Spyros Kyprianou and Dr. Jarring.
Mr. Eban told reporters: "I look forward to resuming discussions on the important problem of restoring peace in the Middle East".
He also said that he was looking forward to discussions with Cypriot leaders on the relations between their two countries.
Before leaving Tel Aviv yesterday, Mr. Eban had said that last Sunday night's retaliatory raid by Israel deep inside Jordan would not figure in his talks with the peace envoy, but he said the increase in bloody incidents proves the need for a durable peace.
Soon after his arrival yesterday, Mr. Eban paid a complimentary visit to President Makarios of Cyprus.
Afterwards, he met Dr. Jarring at the Cyprus Hilton Hotel, where the two men commenced their talks.
Mr. Eban was expected to return to Israel today (Tuesday).
Dr. Jarring is expected to leave for Cairo tomorrow (Wednesday) for a meeting with Mr. Mahmoud Riad, the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Republic.
