  • Story Text: About 200 demonstrators from the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmoneh -- where 18 people were killed by Arab guerillas last week -- burst into the courtyard of the Israeli Knesset Parliament on Wednesday (17 April), to protest against the attacks.

    Windows were broken in the Knesset building as the demonstrators pushed passed guards, just after the Knesset had ended a short debate on the Kiryat Shmoneh attack.

    The demonstrators arrived in four buses -- too late for the debate. But they pushed their way past the Knesset guards at a side entrance near the main, electrically-operated, gate.

    Some of the demonstrators called "Begin to power", in reference to the leader of the opposition Likud Party, Mr. Manahem Begin, who eventually talked to the demonstrators and pleaded with them to be calm.

    The demonstrators also distributed leaflets protesting about security arrangements in Kiryat Shmoneh. They dispersed quietly four later after receiving a promise from the Knesset Speaker, Israeli Yeshiyana, that he would visit Kiryat Shmoneh with the Knesset's Economic Committee Chairman, Mr. Shmuel Tamir, to assess the situation.

    During the Knesset debate on the Kiryat Shmoneh massacre, Defence Minister Moshe Dayan again accused Lebanon of responsibility for the attack because the three guerillas who died in the raid allegedly crossed from southern Lebanon.
