Title:England: Gale Force Winds Wreak Havoc On The Cowes Yachting Regatta
Date:3rd August 1998
Summary:Gale force winds wreaked havoc on the world famous Cowes yachting regatta. Having been deprived of serious winds all week gales arrived with a vengeance on August 3, gusting up to 30 knots. The winds were so strong they broke sails, damaged rigs and caused a string of retirements, resulting in around a quarter of all the entries retiring. Size was no guarantee of safety and large and small competitors alike fell foul of the conditions as the coastguard lifeboats had a busy day. Two people fell overboard into the sea but both were rescued during the course of one of the events in the world's largest sailing regatta.
