Malaysia: Sacked Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim Says There Is A Conspiracy Against Him
- Title: Malaysia: Sacked Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim Says There Is A Conspiracy Against Him
- Date: 3rd September 1998
- Summary: Sacked Malaysian finance minister Anwar Ibrahim has been expelled from Malaysia's dominant political party, one day after being removed from the government, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said. Mahathir gave no reason for Anwar's expulsion from the main party in Malaysia's governing coalition on September 3. The prime minister, who had given no reasons when he stripped Anwar of his cabinet posts, said he had been sacked because he was "not suitable". At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar said he had done nothing wrong and had been the victim of a political conspiracy. He said he believed the sacking and expulsion from the party was because he was perceived as a possible threat to the president. Police said that Anwar was under investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct and other improprieties contained in a book. Mahathir said he would serve as acting finance minister, and no decision had been taken on filling Anwar's two cabinet posts -- finance and deputy prime minister -- or the UMNO deputy presidency.
