- Story Text: President Todor Zhivkov of Bulgaria arrived in Tokyo on Monday (13 March) for a six-day state visit. During his stay, President Zhivkov will have two rounds of talks with the Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda.
SYNOPSIS: President Zhivkov, who last visited Japan eight years ago, was received by Emperor Hirohito at the Akasaka Palace, the state guest house in the centre of Tokyo.
But although the visit began with ceremony, the hard talking followed soon after. President Zhivkov had a meeting with Mr. Fukuda at which the trade imbalance that exists between the two countries was high on the agenda. Last year Japan exported more than 50 million dollars worth of goods to Bulgaria. Japan however imported less than 20 million dollars worth in return. President Zhivkov is to meet business leaders and tour some of Japan's biggest factories before returning home on Saturday. ???
