- Title: Lesotho: Prime Minister Pakaitha Mosisili Declares Army Mutiny Quelled
- Date: 25th September 1998
- Summary: Conditions remain calm in the Lesotho capital Maseru and the country's Prime Minister Pakaitha Mosisili has declared the army mutiny which threw the region into chaos has been quelled. There was no sign on September 25 of the looters who had destroyed shops and businesses in Maseru when violence flared earlier this week. And the guns of Lesotho defence force rebels in the hills above the city were also silent for the first time in three days. Maseru might have been calmed, but far from the reach of the SADEC (South African Development Community) troops the situation remained volatile and civilians complained that they had been abandoned. SADEC troops were visited the newly appointed head of the South African defence force, General Simpiwe Nyando. At the Monkonyane military barracks where there had been fierce fighting the South African army showed off a large arms cache left behind by the fleeing rebels. Small groups of rebel soldiers have fled into the surrounding mountains. They continue to snipe at SADEC soldiers from hide-out. In an attempt to flush them out SADEC forces have been blasting at them with cannons from the foothills.
