The Pele All Stars soccer team beat Japan Senior All Stars 2-0 in the Tokyo Dome on Friday (April 22) when they began a four match tour to raise funds for the fight against AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
The 48,000 spectators watched a team made up of all time soccer greats, such as George Best (Northern Ireland), Eusebio (Portugal), Paolo Rossi (Italy), Kevin Keegan (England), Nene Cubillas (Peru) and Johnny Rep (Netherlands).
But there was disappointment that Pele himself was unable to play because of a minor leg injury. Instead, he made a short speech before the match then watched from the touchline.
Both the goals came in the second half. The first came after 56 minutes when Cubillas, who was the outstanding player for the Pele All Stars, backheeled a free kick to Canadian left back Bruce Wilson, who shot from 20 meters past Japanese goalkeeper Seta.
Cubillas was involved again after 75 minutes in a sweeping move, sending the ball to Zaccarelli, then Jose Altafini who found Johnny Rep free on the left. The Dutchman then placed a clever chip over Seta to make its 2-0.
The match raised 8 million yen ($64,000 US) and the All Stars now go on to play matches in Zimbabwe in May, Paris in September and Los Angeles in October.
