Palestinian fighters stormed a key Shi'ite Amal Moslem stronghold on November 24 overlooking Lebanon's biggest refugee camp, Ain Al-Hilweh. The Palestinians, backed by artillery and under cover of darkness, captured the Shi'ite-held hilltop village of Maghdousheh overlooking the camp. In Damascus, pro-Syrian Lebanese militias warned the Palestinians to give up the ground they had gained. In Beirut, Amal formally denied the fall of Maghdousheh. The village had been a major strategic position for the Syrian-backed Amal in its battles against Palestinian fighters in south Lebanon. The Palestinians took the village despite a barrage of mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades. The attack followed an upsurge in hostilities the previous day. Palestinian sources said six guerrillas were killed and 38 wounded in the fight for the Christian village, held by Amal for the past 18 months. Police said 40 Amal fighters were killed or wounded. They said 20 civilians were injured either in the village or in Sidon, where shells crashed into residential districts for much of the day. The fighting around Sidon came as Lebanese militia leaders, including Nabih Berri of Amal, and Druze militia chief Walid Jumblatt, were in Damascus for talks on the camps war with Syrian Vice-President Abdel-Halim Khaddam.
