- Title: Egypt: JordanS King Abdullah Meets Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak
- Date: 15th March 1999
- Summary: Jordan's King Abdullah, making his first official visit to an Arab country since coming to the throne, has met Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. On March 16 attended the opening ceremony of a link of a network grid between Egypt's Taba and Jordan's southern city of Aqaba -- the first step on the way to a broader Arab electricity grid. Foreign Minister Amr Moussa told reporters at the opening that the leaders had earlier discussed ways to support the Palestinians in the Middle East peace process. Mubarak and Abdullah were to go to Aqaba later to open the Jordanian power station before continuing their discussions. Egypt and Jordan are the only Arab countries with peace agreements with Israel and often consult the Palestinians and Israelis to help overcome problems in peace efforts. The electricity link connects substations at Aqaba and Taba in a power exchange that is aimed at improving the efficiency of the two systems. A statement said future plans include connecting Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and North African countries, and a link between Europe and Africa.
