Title:Iran: Spectacular Solar Eclipse Sweeps Across Middle East
Date:11th August 1999
Summary:The last solar eclipse of the 20th century swept across Europe and the Middle East on August 11, giving millions of people their last look at one of nature's great spectaculars. In Esfahan, where the US space agency NASA said there was the best viewing, Iran's religious leaders directed Moslems to perform the "namaz-e ayat", a special prayer offered at times of natural phenomena to celebrate God's glory and power. Professor Kiasat Por, Professor of Astrology at Estefan University set up equipment to monitor the eclipse, assisted by students. As the sun was blotted out, the crowd erupted with whistles, applause and shouts of "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Great).
