- Title: Egypt: President Hosni Mubarak Begins A New Six-Year Term
- Date: 5th October 1999
- Summary: Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, 71, has begun a new six-year term on October 5, 18 years after Anwar Sadat's assassination swept him to power. His first act of the new term was to change his Prime Minister. Officials said he named Atif Obeid, privatisation chief in the previous cabinet, to replace Kamal Ganzouri, whose government resigned after Mubarak's oath taking. Obeid, a 67-year-old technocrat, has spearheaded Egypt's privatisation programme as minister of public enterprise under Ganzouri, who had been Prime Minister since January 1996. A 21-gun salute rang out after Mubarak took his oath of office in a televised ceremony in parliament, where his National Democratic Party (NDP) has an overwhelming majority. Mubarak, the only presidential nominee, won nearly 94 percent of the vote in a referendum on September 26. WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY.
