- Story Text: Young Palestinians showed off their innovative designs at an exhibition called 'Made in Palestine' in Gaza.
The products on display ranged from lights that encourage plants to grow to electricity smart card meters.
The exhibition was organised by al-Nayzak, meaning 'Meteor,' a group that aims to encourage scientific education in the Palestinian territories.
Muhammad Khrim is head of the organisation.
''The inventors participate in this exhibition. We try to find some winners here and see who will participate in the exhibition 'Made in the Arab World'," said Khrim.
As well as the Gaza event, a similar exhibition took place in Ramallah.
Winners from the exhibitions are selected to take part in the 'Made in the Arab World' competition, where they have the chance to win 50, 000 US dollars.
It's a pan-Arab competition that links young scientists with industries, which in turn help them to realise their projects.
Many of the young inventors showcasing their work in Gaza are engineering students from the Islamic University.
''We designed a device that converts the energy of the waves of the sea to electricity by moving the water to huge tanks at a specific height and generating power by letting the water go through the tank into a turbine in which we can generate electricity," said engineering student Naji Adel.
'"This is a prepaid watt meter for electricity. We use a smart card in order to turn on the electricity. If we put the card in the system, it will give us the quantity of money inside the card and turn on the electricity for use at home," said Mansoor Nasser El Din, explaining how his design works.
Due to the nature of some of the projects, it appeared as though some of the students were inspired by their own living conditions in the poverty--stricken, Israeli-blockaded enclave, with two of the inventions on display related to generating electricity.
Power cuts are a regular occurrence in the Gaza strip, with residents at times going for hours on end without electricity.
Gaza's precarious energy supply is bad at the best of times, with a rickety infrastructure system badly degraded during recent confrontations between Israel and Hamas.
Israel's bombardment of Gaza's power plant in 2006 destroyed six transformers and at present, only one transformer is operating at a much-reduced capacity.
But the situation has been made much worse by a row over the funding of fuel supplies, pitting Hamas against its arch internal rival, the Palestinian Authority, which used to control Gaza and still handles the enclave's power bill.
Two-thirds of Gaza's power needs are provided by Israel and, to a very small degree, by Egypt, with the remaining third generated locally by the war-damaged power plant.
The young scientists taking part in the 'Made in Palestine' exhibition now have their sights set on taking their scientific career even further at the Made in the Arab World competition, organised by the Arab Science and Technology Foundation.
The competition categories include automotive technology, communications and networking, electronics and biomedical engineering. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
