Thailand: More Than 500 Skydivers Take Part In Mass Freefall Jump As Part Of King's Birthday Celebrations
- Title: Thailand: More Than 500 Skydivers Take Part In Mass Freefall Jump As Part Of King's Birthday Celebrations
- Date: 2nd December 1999
- Summary: Skydivers in Thailand are claiming a new world record for a mass freefall jump - all part of celebrations for the Thai king's birthday. More than 500 people gathered in Bangkok on December 2 to participate in a mass jump over one of the world's most congested cities. The event is one of the most dramatic marking the 72nd birthday of the world's longest reigning monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Four C-130 planes were used to release the jumpers over the busy Thai capital. The parachutists had only 17 seconds to get out of the aircraft over the landing area and freefall for 90 seconds. A myriad of candy-coloured canopies descended over the legendary Grand Palace to land in the Royal Fields, a clearing about the size of three football fields in the heart of the city.
