- Title: Thailand-China-Philippines: Asian Countries Prepare For The Millennium And Possible Y2K Computer Bug Problems
- Date: 30th December 1999
- Summary: Asian countries are embracing the new millennium in different ways. Thailand officially opened its national Y2K command centre. In Hong Kong, authorities ensured air safety at one of Asia's busiest airports. Filipinos shrugged off fears over possible Y2K bug problems and geared up for street parties. With the new millennium approaching in less than one day, Asian countries are gearing up, but in different ways. In Hong Kong, authorities ensured safety at the Hong Kong International Airport -- one of the busiest airports in Asia. "With additional staff and availability of the contingency arrangement we don't foresee any major problems for the Y2K rollover," said Leung Woon Yin, assistant director of the Civil Aviation. More than 120 additional air traffic control officers will be deployed at the Hong Kong International Airport On Friday night (December 31) to activate Y2K-contingency measures. The move is part of an Asia-Pacific-Wide plan. Up to 82 flights had been cancelled for Friday (December 31) and 131 cancelled on New Year's Day. A total of 416 and 352 flights will fly on those two days respectively, down from a daily average of about 500 flights. In the Philippines, the whole country is bustling with activity to celebrate the coming of the new millennium. With many banks putting up signs saying "Y2K ready," millions of Filipinos will whoop it up at outdoor parties se in Manila, Makati and other population centres across the country. But not everyone is carefree. Dr Preciosa Soliven, whose husband Maximo is publisher of the major daily Philippine Star, launched a massive information campaign on the Y2K bug. She even conducted drills in school and in her house, cutting power and water sources and shutting off telecommunications, so her students and her grandchildren would get used to such scenarios.
