- Story Text: North Korea Foreign Minister Pak Ui-Chun was in Indonesia on Monday (August 2) for meetings with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
The two met to make preparations ahead of the special ministerial meeting to review millennium development goals among countries in Asia and the Pacific being held in Jakarta for the next two days.
Monday's meeting highlighted the North Korea's efforts to gain support from other Asian states, including Indonesia, over a ship sinking row, which has placed it under threat by world powers, especially the US, and deepened its isolation from the rest of the world.
"We have made references to the situation on the Korean peninsula-- the matters to do with the recent incidents of the sinking of ROK's naval vessel, as well as the subject matter of the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," said Natalegawa during a press briefing after the talks.
Natalegawa said during the meeting he encouraged North Korea to return to the nuclear talks.
"Sooner or later we all parties must return to the dialogue, to the negotiation process. In our view, in Indonesia's view it is sooner is better then later. Otherwise there is inherent risk of event developing out of control and we may end up in a situation where we dont want to be," he added.
Natalegawa said that both countries intend to focus on economic development.
The visit comes just days after concerns were voiced by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over potential nuclear weapons cooperation between the North Korea and Myanmar.
Last month, Southeast Asian foreign ministers met in Vietnam's Hanoi, where Myanmar's foreign minister repeated that the country had no ambition to become a nuclear power, denying a report published in June by an exile group that it was trying to develop a secret nuclear program with the intention of making an atomic bomb. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
