- Story Text: John James Wrathall was sworn in as Rhodesia's new President in Salisbury on Wednesday (14 January).
The former Finance Minister becomes his country's second President since the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965.
He succeeds Clifford DuPont ...who retired last month after ten years as Rhodesia's President.
Mr. Wrathall was sworn in by Chief Justice, Sir Hugh Beadle, at a Government House ceremony witnessed by Prime Minister Ian Smith and his Cabinet Ministers.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Wrathall said past years had brought progress towards a goal sought by all Rhodesians -- a fair constitutional settlement which would bring the promise of a full and good future for all people in the country.
"It has chanced that I take office during a time of delicate negotiations", he said, referring to talks between the white minority government and African nationalists on Rhodesia's future.
"Like all I pray that these will reach a balanced conclusion and lead to Rhodesia's continued progress and prosperity", he added.
