Title:Chile: ChileS New President Ricardo Lagos Meets With The Country's Top Military Brass
Date:24th January 2000
Summary:Chile's first leftist president since Salvador Allende has met with the country's top military brass in a cordial meeting. Chile's president-elect Ricardo Lagos met with the Commander-in-Chief of the country's armed forces, Lieutenant General Ricardo Izurieta, January 24, saying that his relations with the military will be good. The private meeting lasted only 30 minutes and Izurieta did not speak to reporters. Lagos was elected on January 16 in runoff elections that pitted him against Joaquin Lavin. The socialist president-elect is the third consecutive presidential ballot victory for the ruling centre-left coalition since Pinochet stepped down a decade ago.
