- Story Text: Internationally acclaimed reggae band UB40 holds landmark concert in Kampala, the band's last performance with lead singer Ali Campbell.
UB40, Britain's premier reggae band chose Uganda's capital, Kampala, for the band's last performance with lead singer Ali Campbell. He previously announced he would quit after the Kampala concert.
But Campbell's brother, Robin Campbell was optimistic the band would be able keep performing and recording even after Ali's departure.
"We are very sad about the fact that this might well be Ali's last concert. We don't actually know what the situation is really, we are very disappointed and quite sad that this might be the last show with Ali but you know UB40 will continue, we will go on. We're not quite sure in what guise yet. So we have nothing but good wishes for Ali in whatever he does,"
said Campbell.
UB40 was formed in 1978. They are famous for reworking title tracks of some of reggae's most popular artists.
Coming to Africa is an opportunity for the band members to grow as artists and get fresh inspiration for their music.
"We are in the cradle of civilisation Africa, you know this is where we all come from and this looks like where our future is coming from as well, and if the world looks to Africa a little bit more, we might get through to the next twenty second century even. You know what I mean? Tap into a bit of this inner strength you guys have got," said Brian Travers, another band member.
Those who attended the concert said they were pleased that they were able to witness what may be UB40's last performance with its original members.
"It is a very big privilege, because we are not going to find them together any where unless here in Uganda. Now that they have performed, the lucky ones have watched the show, the unlucky ones have missed the show. They will never see them together again," said one fan.
"Fantastic, it was a brilliant show, very very good. A bit disappointed the way it seems to have ended, I wasn't, sort of, warned about that, it ended suddenly but it was a great show," said another fan.
UB40 has sold more than 70 million records, including three U.K. number one singles 'Red,Red Wine,' 'I Got You Babe' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love.' - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
