- Title: United Kingdom: Britain's Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Attends Special Lunch In City Of London To Mark Her Forthcoming 100Th Birthday
- Date: 27th June 2000
- Summary: Britain's Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was guest of honour at a special lunch in the City of London to mark her 100th birthday. Accompanied by Princess Margaret, Britain's Queen Mother was entertained at the Guildhall on June 27 with 500 guests who sat down to a meal of lobster from Scotland and lamb from Wales, followed by strawberry meringue. Other members of the royal family, including the Duke of York, the Countess of Wessex and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, were present, as were former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, London's first elected mayor, Ken Livingstone and Britain's Home Secretary Jack Straw. The Queen Mother was presented with gifts including a watercolour painting entitled "A View Across London from Porchester Terrace" by John Varley. In a brief, and rare, speech, she thanked her hosts for the "wonderful reception that I have had here today". She added: "It has been a great joy, and may I also thank you for this lovely picture. I know that when I look at it, which I am sure will be very often, I shall think of this extremely happy day spent at the Guildhall. " After the speeches and toasts, four bagpipers from the Scots Guards marched around the wood-panelled hall, playing for the Queen Mother and the other guests. The Queen Mother, whose 100th birthday is on August 4, was then given three cheers and a round of applause by the guests before she left the hall. WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY.
