- Story Text: In Uganda, the President. General Idi Amin, conferred degrees and diplomas on more than 400 students who have been studying at Makerere University in Kampala. General Amin is Chancellor of the University. It is the only one in the country.
The Zanzibar leader and Tenzanian Vice-President, Sheikh About Jumbe, was the guest of honour at the ceremony on Monday (8 October). He is a graduate of Makerere University, having gained a diploma of education in 1945. Sheikh Jumbe has been in Uganda, attending the eleventh independence celebrations.
Most of the students at Makerere University are Ugandan, but others come from Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Sudan and South Africa. A graduation ceremony takes place twice a year - in March and in October.
SYNOPSIS: For final year students at Makerere University in Uganda, Monday was a proud day. The Ugandan President, General Idi Amin, who is Chancellor of the University, presented the degrees and diplomas that marked the successful end of their student days. One of the University's most distinguished graduates, Sheikh About Jumbe, the Zanzibar leader, was guest of honour at the ceremony. He was awarded a diploma of education from the University in 1945.
Makerere is the only University in Uganda and graduation ceremonies are held twice yearly. Four hundred and twenty-nine students graduated at Monday's ceremony.
Most of the students are Ugandan but others come from Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Sudan and South Africa. They will become doctors, scientists, teachers and technical experts in many fields, including agriculture.
Among the graduates were several who had gained masters degrees. Four students graduated as Masters of Science in Agriculture and four more gained doctorates in other subjects.
