  • Story Text: President Idi Amin of Uganda toured closed Asian shops in the capital, Kampala, on Wednesday (December 27) -- prior to their allocation among Africans who had already applied at interviews with government officials earlier that day. Some Europeans watched his tour.

    The Ugandan Government, meanwhile, has taken control of nearly forty British-owned companies and tea estates -- and has reduced the amount of money and assets which Britons can take out of the country.

    SYNOPSIS: Africans gathered outside Government offices in the Ugandan capital of Kampala on Wednesday to apply for Asian shops and businesses, which are being allocated following the expulsion of about thirty thousand non-citizen Asians. They were interviewed by a committee including army officers and the Minister for Public Services and Local Administration, Mr. Justus Byagagaire.

    President Idi Amin, who ordered the expulsion of the Asian in his bid to 'Ugandanise' the country's economy, later toured the shops which were to be allocated. Earlier, in a Christmas message, he told Ugandans to rejoice that they had rid the country of what he called 'foreign exploitation'.

    Continuing his bid to take over foreign-owned companies, President Amin has expropriated nearly forty British-owned concerns -- and severely restricted the amount of money Britons can take out of the country when leaving.
