Russia: The Mother Of The Captain Of The Kursk, Is Convinced That The Submarine Should Have Been Lifted
- Title: Russia: The Mother Of The Captain Of The Kursk, Is Convinced That The Submarine Should Have Been Lifted
- Date: 26th October 2000
- Summary: The mother of the captain of the Kursk submarine that sank in August has said she is convinced that the submarine should have been lifted immediately after the tragedy. The body of her son, Lieutenant-Captain Dmitry Kolesnikov, was recovered from the Kursk submarine on October 26. A letter found in his pocket has indicated that at least 23 crewmembers of the sunken submarine did not die instantly. Divers found a small piece of paper inside the Dmitry Kolesnikov's pocket. The last scribbled words of the dying officer aboard the Kursk submarine indicated that at least 23 members of the 118-man crew did not die instantly as previously thought. The decision by the Russian authorities to recover bodies of the Kursk crew faced mixed reception among relatives of sailors and officers. Some believe that the mission is too dangerous and would risk the lives of the divers. The Russian navy confirmed that a letter had been found in the pocket of a dead crew member showing that many of the crew did not die instantly, but did not mention the number of sailors the letter had referred to. So far, bodies of four crewmembers have been recovered and only one of them has been identified.
