- Story Text: The coffin carrying MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli arrived back at his home in Coriano on Tuesday (October 25) as his parents, relatives and friends began to come to terms with their loss.
A police escort led the hearse as it pulled into the country villa. Simoncelli's father Paolo was seen hugging relatives as he arrived back at the house. Paolo Simoncelli had escorted his son's coffin back from Malaysia after the tragic accident in the Grand Prix on Sunday.
The small town of Coriano, lies approximately 400 kilometres north of Rome on the eastern Italian coast, and is home to some 10,000 people, many of whom knew Simoncelli.
Many of the messages left in the central town square have been addressed to number 58 or Sic - the three letter abbreviation of his name used onscreen during races.
All over town people were seen putting up posters with 58 written on them.
"Apart from the personality that he was, he just entered into the hearts of people like someone from your family" said Coriano resident Nicoletta Calo.
"He was a lovely boy, so sweet and we have lost him, he will have his angel which will fly high" she said.
People had been arriving throughout the day to lay floral tributes and messages in the central town square. Everyone seemed to have their own personal story about Marco.
"He was so nice with my children, he had his photo taken with them and signed baseball caps for them that he gave them" said Coriano resident Oscar Giungi.
"I want to remember Marco like that, how he was, smiling and lighthearted. I am sure he will give the strength to me, all the Coriano residents and people from the sport to carry on" Giungi said.
The coffin will lay in state on Wednesday for fans and relatives to pass by and pay their last respects.
Town officials say they are expecting some 50,000 people to turn up for the funeral which will be held on Thursday afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
