- Date: 10th November 2000
- Summary: Denmark's Queen Mother Ingrid, who died on November 7 at the age of 90, was brought to the Christiansborg palace chapel in Copenhagen to lie in state until her burial next week. Thousands of people carrying torches lined the streets of Fredensborg, 35 kilometres (20 miles) north of the capital, as the hearse carrying the Queen Mother's coffin left Fredensborg castle chapel adjacent to her home. Her memorial on November 14 will be Denmark's first royal funeral since the death of her husband King Frederik IX in 1972. Thousands more gathered outside the Christiansborg palace where she will remain until her funeral at Roskilde Cathedral 35 km west of Copenhagen. A daughter of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, Queen Ingrid married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 1935. Her husband became King Frederik IX in 1947. She is survived by three children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her oldest daughter, Margrethe, became Queen of Denmark in January 1972. Dating back to the mid-10th century, Denmark's royal family is Europe's oldest unbroken monarchy and closely related to the royal households of Sweden, Norway, Britain, Spain and Greece.
